I finally found a winter coat that remembers I have a waist
A letter from a reader
At 68, I finally found a winter coat that remembers I have a waist
This is a letter about a coat, which even I can see is a strange thing to sit down and write. But I have now had the same conversation about it four times in a fortnight, and I am the sort who would rather write a thing down once than repeat herself all winter.
It started outside the butcher’s on a Saturday morning. My friend Hazel, who has known me long enough to be honest, took hold of my arm in the queue and said something I have been chewing on since.
That coat has a waist. Where on earth did you find a winter coat with a waist?
We let two people go ahead of us while I told her. And she was right to ask, because I had spent years believing the thing I imagine you believe too.
How it happens
Somewhere around the first cold week of autumn, every woman I know disappears. Not literally. Into her coat.
Because winter coats are built like postboxes. Straight up, straight down, warm as anything, and completely shapeless. You put one on over a jumper and whatever figure you had is gone until spring. Everyone at the bus stop is the same padded rectangle in navy or black.
And we accept it, because we have all quietly agreed that warm and shapeless are the same thing. You can have a waist from May to September, and then it goes into storage with the sandals.
What I had wrong
Here is the bit I got most wrong. I thought a coat with any shape to it would be a thin coat. Something for London women who take taxis.
Then I found this one. It is a proper warm coat, room for a thick jumper underneath and all. The difference is in the details. The front wraps across and closes with one button at the waist, and there is a small buttoned tab at each side that pulls the whole coat in, just there, so it follows you instead of hanging off you.
That is the whole trick. The coat hangs from the shoulders and comes in at the middle, and suddenly it is a silhouette rather than a sleeping bag.

Mine is the camel
It is from Manchester Boutique, a small British boutique that has been quietly dressing women like us for a few years now.
It is called the Melanie, and mine is the camel, which I chose because camel goes over everything I own. Big proper lapels, a smooth matte finish, and it falls to below the knee, so it covers whatever length of skirt or trouser is underneath.

It hangs in the hallway now, and I will be honest, it is the first coat I have owned that looks like it belongs on the hook rather than thrown over it.

What happened on Saturday

I wore it over a black roll neck and dark trousers, which is not exactly a daring outfit. And Hazel stopped me in the queue as if I had walked past her in a ballgown.
Since then it has been the woman at church, my neighbour over the fence, and my daughter, who borrowed it to nip to the shop and came back forty minutes later. Nobody has ever had a single word to say about any coat I have owned before this one.
Three things I have learned since
One. The tabs do the work. Buttoned in, the coat comes in at the waist and stays there. No tie to knot, nothing dangling in the rain, nothing to lose.
Two. Warm does not have to mean bulky. There is room for a proper jumper underneath, and it still reads as a smart coat rather than padding.
Three. Camel lifts everything. Over black, over navy, over the jumper I have worn to death. It makes the whole outfit look chosen.
About the price
I want to be straightforward about this, because it was the thing that made me hesitate.
The Melanie is £36.95 at the moment. It was £74.00.
My first thought was that a coat at that price would feel like it. It does not. And then I thought about what I have actually spent over the years on postbox coats I never once felt smart in, and stopped arguing with myself.
I did what I imagine you are doing now and went and read the reviews before I ordered. Just over three hundred of them, sitting at 4.2 stars. Not the suspiciously perfect five you see on some websites, which if I am honest made me trust it more. One woman had written, “First coat in ages I do not feel like a walking sleeping bag in.” That was the one that did it for me.
They do it in camel, brown and a deep red, and I have been eyeing the red for best.

What I would tell you if we were friends
If you and I were stood in that queue and you asked me, this is what I would say. So here it is, the short version.
Go and look at your winter coat on its hook. If it is a warm rectangle that makes you look like everyone else at the bus stop, that is not because you stopped caring. It is because nobody offered you a warm coat with a waist.
Two practical things. The sale is on now, and the first autumn stock is already going, so the camel and the middle sizes disappear first. It comes in sizes 10/12 to 20/22.
Winter does not have to mean disappearing until spring.
